Romantic Poetry Analysis
Here are analysis of three poems from the Romantic period.
“The Lotus Blossom Cowers” by Heinrich Heine
p. 795
lines 1-4: The lotus blossom hides from the sunlight, dreaming and waiting for night.
lines 5-8: The lotus blossom awakes under the love of the moonlight. Only then does she
show her face.
lines 9-12: The lotus blossom grows radiant under the moonlight, becoming alive and
feeling love and the pain that comes with it.
“When I Have Fears That I May Cease To Be” by John Keats
p. 803
lines 1-4: When I fear that I may die before I have written all that I want to, before all my
words become books;
lines 5-8: When I fear that I will not live to experience, by chance, high romance.
lines 9-12: Speaking to his current lady: And when I feel that I may never see you again
or enjoy the power of love that comes easy,
lines 12-14: Then I stand alone at the edge of the world and think until love and fame
mean nothing.
“Composed Upon Westminster Bridge” by William Wordsworth
p. 732
lines 1-3: There isn’t anything more beautiful on Earth. One who could pass by such a
touching sight has such a boring soul.
lines 4-5: It is a beautiful, silent, and bare morning in London.
lines 6-8: The ships and buildings blend in with the land and the sky, shining in the pure
air.
lines 9-12: Never has the sun’s first light made anything so beautiful. I have never felt a
calm so deep, here by this free river.
lines 13-14: Dear God! All the might of the city seems asleep!
